The Function of Air-Conditioner Filters

Air-conditioner filter screens play a crucial role in filtering dust and other airborne contaminants, which is essential for maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Over time, as the air conditioner operates, significant amounts of dust and grime accumulate on the filter, evaporator, and air-delivery system, creating an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. These harmful substances can seriously compromise indoor air quality, posing risks to both physical and mental health. Moreover, accumulated dirt reduces the cooling efficiency of the air conditioner and shortens its service life.
Air-conditioner filter screens play a crucial role in filtering dust and other airborne contaminants, which is essential for maintaining a healthy indoor environment. Over time, as the air conditioner operates, significant amounts of dust and grime accumulate on the filter, evaporator, and air-handling system, creating an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. These harmful substances can seriously compromise indoor air quality, posing risks to both physical and mental health. Moreover, accumulated dirt reduces the cooling efficiency of the air conditioner and shortens its service life.
Ordinary plastic mesh is primarily used for dust removal. Another type of filter, shaped either triangular or rectangular and known as a photocatalytic filter, can be installed within factories. Its main functions are air purification, sterilization, deodorization, and pollution prevention. It can be thoroughly washed with water, dried, and then put back into service.
The photocatalyst for air-conditioner filters can be studied as a novel air-purification product, with the following key functions:
1. Air purification function: Effectively purifies harmful organic substances such as formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides from the body.
2. Sterilization function: Effective against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. It can also decompose harmful compounds released from dead bacteria. Deodorization system 3. Management function: Exhibits the efficacy of Chinese bio-deodorization technology products in eliminating odors from smoke, toilets, garbage, and animals.
4. Anti-pollution functionality: oil-resistant, dust-proof, and resistant to production-related contaminants. It effectively prevents mold, water rust, aflatoxins in restrooms, bathroom rust, and discoloration of coated surfaces—functions that air-conditioner filters also deliver. Additionally, it can purify water pollution and remove organic harmful substances from water, while its surface exhibits superhydrophilicity, anti-fogging properties, and easy cleaning and drying.
Before using an air-conditioner filter, most residents first clean the dust-covered mesh. However, survey results show that the heat exchanger fins behind the household air-conditioner filter are a major source of bacterial contamination, with bacterial counts as high as 91,259 per square centimeter and a mold exceedance rate of 84%.
The fins of air-conditioner filters can become a major breeding ground for pathogenic microorganisms. In heated-air conditioning systems, the temperature and humidity at the fin surfaces are often optimal for microbial growth; coupled with the limited indoor ventilation typical in Chinese homes during winter, this creates an ideal environment for pathogens to thrive and proliferate, making students particularly susceptible to infection.
Mold that grows inside air conditioners can spread through the indoor air and infect human skin, the respiratory system, and other areas; meanwhile, bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus may cause gastrointestinal illnesses like diarrhea. Therefore, before designing winter heating-mode air-conditioning products, it is recommended that air-conditioning manufacturers use specialized cleaning agents to thoroughly disinfect both the filter screens and the heat exchanger fins. During operation, this disinfection should be performed every month. Moreover, after each period of use in heating mode, another round of disinfection is necessary. By doing so, we can better control indoor air pollution and prevent the proliferation of harmful microorganisms.
When cleaning the panel, avoid applying excessive pressure. Use a neutral detergent diluted with water: first wring out excess water from the cloth, then gently wipe the surface. After cleaning, thoroughly wipe away any remaining detergent from the housing.
