Air Conditioner Filter Manufacturer: How to Remove an Air Conditioner Filter

Air conditioners are appliances we use frequently in the summer. Users typically only see the exterior of the unit, but may not be aware of what’s inside—or may not fully understand its inner workings. In the case of air conditioners, the air filter plays a crucial role: when it gets dirty, it needs to be removed and cleaned. So, what steps are involved in removing the air filter? This article will walk you through how to disassemble an air conditioner’s filter.

1. Before removing the air conditioner filter, carefully open the air handler. Typically, the air handler has two small retaining clips; simply gently pry the cover outward to release it.

2. Open the air conditioner cover; there are two buttons inside. To fully open the cover, you’ll need to gently pry it open. Next, I’ll show you how to remove the filter. The filter is fairly easy to locate, but it’s only held in place by a few retaining clips. First, push the filter upward to disengage the lower edge from the clips, then gently pull the filter downward.

3. Additionally, after removing the air conditioner’s filter, you’ll find black particles on the enhanced filter. Set these aside, wash them in the laundry, and let them dry. Then carefully rinse the filter several times with clean water, scrub it repeatedly with a soft brush, and finally allow it to air-dry in a well-ventilated area. When cleaning, do not bend the filter—although it is flexible, plastic should not be bent.

4. Remove the filter, rinse it thoroughly with running tap water—do not use detergents or any other cleaning agents; simply rinse it clean. Allow it to air-dry in a shaded area; do not expose it to direct sunlight. Most filters are made of plastic and cannot withstand high temperatures. After washing, reinstall the filter inside the air conditioner and, if time permits, wipe down the interior of the unit as soon as possible. This will ensure the air conditioner operates cleanly going forward. Do not use a brush or other abrasive tools when cleaning, as this can damage the filter and impair the air conditioner’s performance.

5. Installing the filter is more cumbersome than removing it. To install, press the filter down along the retaining slot while carefully observing its front and back sides; the small protruding button should be on the back. Once the filter is fully seated, make sure nothing inside gets caught in the groove. Then press the filter firmly until the final protruding button snaps into the retaining slot, preventing the filter from bowing upward.

That concludes the introduction to how to disassemble an air conditioner filter. While a clean air conditioner filter may look nice, we can always ask the person in charge to wash it for us. Still, that doesn’t quite match the picture—after all, it’s just a small filter. If we can remove and clean it ourselves, why leave it to someone else? As explained above, you now know how to take the air conditioner filter off.
