Activated carbon filters are commonly used water treatment equipment in the processing industry. The filter vessel is packed with activated carbon and can serve as a pre-treatment stage for desalination systems. Their primary functions include removing residual chlorine, free substances, microorganisms, and heavy metal ions from water, thereby improving effluent quality and preventing poisoning caused by residual oxygen and other free contaminants (such as those that might affect downstream reverse osmosis membranes and ion-exchange resins). Additionally, these filters can effectively and thoroughly reduce water color and eliminate off-flavors. Operating principle of activated carbon filters:
Activated carbon filters are commonly used water-treatment equipment in the processing industry. The filter vessel is packed with activated carbon and can serve as a pre-treatment stage for desalination systems. Its primary functions include removing residual chlorine, free substances, microorganisms, and heavy-metal ions from the water, thereby improving effluent quality and preventing poisoning caused by residual oxygen and other free contaminants (such as those that might affect downstream reverse-osmosis membranes and ion-exchange resins). In addition, activated carbon filters can effectively and thoroughly reduce water color and eliminate off-flavors. Operating principle of activated carbon filters:
A balanced surface concentration develops on the surface of activated carbon granules. The particle size of activated carbon is closely related to its adsorption capacity: generally, the smaller the particles, the larger the effective filtration surface area. Consequently, powdered activated carbon has a very large total filtration area and excellent adsorption performance; however, it tends to be easily carried into the water tank by the water flow, making it difficult to control, which is why it is seldom used. In contrast, granular activated carbon, being in a molded form, does not flow easily, reducing the likelihood of clogging in the activated carbon filter bed caused by organic impurities in the water. It also boasts strong adsorption capacity and is more convenient to transport.
Installation steps for the activated carbon filter:
1. During design and installation, the tandem activated carbon filter should be positioned near the pump in the activated carbon filtration system, with the filter’s inlet connected to the pump’s discharge pipe and its outlet connected to the pump’s suction pipe.
2. During equipment installation, a maintenance clearance of no less than 600 mm shall be provided on all sides.
3. The activated carbon filter shall be installed in a well-ventilated indoor space; if installation outdoors is unavoidable, a rainproof enclosure must be provided. During installation and handling, ensure that the electrical control unit is protected from mechanical compression and moisture.
4. Pressure gauges shall be installed at the inlet and outlet ports of the water treatment unit in China, as well as in the vicinity thereof; the water pressure at these ports can reflect the operational status of the water treatment unit.
5. For the new system, prior to its official commissioning, the entire piping system must be flushed to remove impurities such as welding slag, wire fragments, and scale from steel pipes, and all yellow-rust water must be completely drained.
What are the primary functions of an activated carbon filter? Let’s take a brief look together below.
1. It can be used for pretreatment in ion exchange, electrodialysis, and reverse osmosis applications, effectively removing organic pollutants and residual chlorine from water, thereby preventing resin fouling and membrane poisoning. This not only ensures the service life of ion-exchange resins and membranes but also guarantees the normal operation of the system.
2. Suitable for treating brackish water: effectively removes bitterness, resulting in drinking water quality that exceeds that of ordinary tap water;
3. Suitable for advanced water treatment: effectively degrades and removes color and odors, thereby improving drinking water quality.
