Air Conditioner Filter Maintenance

Maintenance of the air-conditioning filter is critical to the operation of the air-conditioning unit, as it directly affects indoor air quality; therefore, routine maintenance of the air-conditioning filter is a key component of central air-conditioning system upkeep. Air-conditioning filter maintenance procedures:

1. With regard to primary and medium-efficiency air-conditioning filters, China’s national development strategy should advocate cleaning them at least once a month; if the accumulation of dust is particularly heavy, the cleaning interval should be further shortened. As for high-efficiency air-conditioning filters, their replacement should be carried out promptly in strict accordance with the technical requirements for clean production.

2. The air conditioner filter should be cleaned with warm water below 40°C; do not rub it during cleaning. If the air filter is dirty, a neutral detergent may be used for stain removal. If the filter is only lightly soiled, it can be rinsed directly with water.

3. After the air-conditioning filter has been thoroughly cleaned, allow it to dry completely before reinstalling it in the central air-conditioning unit. When installing the air filter, be sure to align it with the airflow direction indicated on the filter, and follow the installation instructions precisely.

Air conditioner filters are an essential component of air conditioning systems, effectively trapping airborne dust and debris. Since most households rely on air conditioners for heating during colder months, keeping the unit clean is crucial. Today, we’ll walk you through how to remove, clean, and reinstall your air conditioner filter.

First, remove the outer casing. There are two small retaining slots on the casing; gently pull the cover outward, then remove the filter, which is held in place by these slots. Start by pushing the metal filter upward like this. Once the bottom edge disengages from the slots, gently pull the filter down to take it out. After removing the filter, you’ll notice that some air conditioners have black particulate matter trapped in the filter—this should be removed and cleaned thoroughly. Rinse the filter several times with water, and if necessary, scrub it lightly with a soft brush. Then lay it out in a well-ventilated area to dry completely. Note: Do not bend the filter during cleaning, as although it is somewhat flexible, plastic cannot withstand bending.

When installing, first insert the filter screen along the retaining slot, making sure to align the front and back—there is a protruding button on the back. Ensure the filter is fully seated in the slot so that the inner edge locks securely in place and does not come loose. Press down firmly on the filter screen to prevent it from bulging, and snap the small protruding tab into the retaining slot.

When cleaning the air conditioner’s filter, first disconnect the power supply to ensure safety, then open the system control panel and remove the filter. Use a brush-type vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove dust from the filter, followed by a thorough rinse with clean water. If the filter is heavily soiled or greasy, you may use a degreasing agent, a neutral detergent, or soapy water for cleaning; rinse thoroughly with water, allow it to dry completely, and then reinstall it. Note that you must not use hot water exceeding 40°C for cleaning, nor should you use laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, gasoline, turpentine, or similar substances, as these can damage the filter and cause it to deform. In addition, always clean with plain water, dry with a soft cloth, or air-dry in a shaded area; do not expose the filter to direct sunlight or dry it over an open flame, as this can also lead to deformation. After reinstallation, plug the unit back in and let it run for 3–5 minutes, then set the remote control to the cooling mode and adjust the temperature to a low setting. Once the unit is started, it should operate normally and efficiently.
