Due to current air-quality concerns, air purifiers have become extremely popular in our daily lives. Air filters ensure that indoor air is continuously circulated, allowing us to breathe fresh air and improving our quality of life. But do you know what exactly an air purifier uses to filter the air? Here, I’d like to provide a brief overview of air filters. Air purifiers are equipped with air filters, which typically remove pollutants from the air. However, these filters also require regular cleaning and maintenance. Let’s take a closer look. I hope this information proves helpful.
1. Simple air filter cleaning: Household air purifiers are equipped with a pre-filter, which is best cleaned once or twice a month. During each cleaning, simply remove the filter and use a vacuum cleaner or a cloth to wipe away dust. Some pre-filters can also be rinsed directly under running water; alternatively, gently scrub them with a soft brush, then shake off excess water or blow them dry with a hair dryer before reinstalling them in the air purifier.
2. HEPA air filters must not be washed with water: Filters that employ HEPA technology, unless explicitly stated otherwise, should never be washed. Given the severe indoor air pollution in China, HEPA filters typically have a service life of only about three months—or even less. In other words, HEPA filters need to be replaced frequently. Although these filters are relatively expensive, regular and timely cleaning can extend their effective usage period; however, once the filter material turns black, it must be replaced as soon as possible.
3. Regularly expose activated carbon to sunlight: While activated-carbon filters do need to be replaced frequently to prevent adsorption saturation, they can also be periodically removed and exposed to direct sunlight to naturally desorb and remove accumulated dust. For watch faces with heavy surface dust, wipe them with a soft cloth and then expose them to the sun for about three hours. Performing this maintenance routine regularly helps maintain optimal purification performance and prolongs the filter’s service life.
4. Active Nano-Microcrystal Purification Module: The active nano-microcrystal purification module (air filter) in household air purifiers should be replaced annually. However, if many people live in the home—especially if there are heavy smokers—it is best to replace it every six months.
The above is an introduction to the air purifier’s filter. It is essential for us to understand how to clean and maintain the air purifier’s filter if we want to extend the appliance’s service life—knowledge in this area is absolutely critical. Here, we would like to remind everyone that air pollution is currently very severe, so please exercise caution when purchasing an air purifier, as this directly affects the comfort and well-being of your family.
