Air purifiers are equipped with more than one filter, so their maintenance methods differ accordingly. First, the amount of dust collected by the pre-filter and the main filter will increase over time. This has the greatest impact on the air purifier’s intake volume and, ultimately, on its air-purification performance. Therefore, when maintaining an air purifier, the first priority is to keep the filters clean—and the cleaning process should be as simple as possible. You can either vacuum off the dust or rinse the filters directly with water. During maintenance, handle the filters gently and avoid any physical damage. Once cleaned, the filter should regain its original suction efficiency for optimal performance in future use.
Second, attention should be paid to cleaning the filter. The cleaning method for the filter differs fundamentally from that of the pre-filter. During the process of cleaning the filter, it is not enough to simply remove dust; the filter should also be regularly exposed to sunlight. This exposure helps eliminate bacteria trapped within the filter, thereby enhancing its purification performance. For example, in many activated-carbon filters used by consumers, the filter traps airborne bacteria on the surface of the activated carbon.
The number of filter stages varies depending on the air purifier brand. For example, high-end models typically include not only the pre-filter and main filter mentioned earlier, but also an odor-removal filter. This type of filter is virtually impossible to clean effectively using conventional methods; the recommended approach is to rinse it with plain water, optionally adding a mild, low-corrosivity cleaning solution. It is crucial to avoid using highly corrosive cleaning agents, as these can damage the material of the filter surface. After cleaning, allow the filter to dry thoroughly before reinstalling it in the air purifier. If the filter is reinstalled while still damp, its odor-removal performance will decline significantly, and there is a risk of water contamination, which over time can severely degrade the filter itself.
